Some gypsum may contain lime in one of its several forms, and that lime will raise pH. Since pure gypsum is pH neutral and lime is not, gypsum is a better source of calcium for soils which lack that mineral but which have a balanced pH, as the University of Minnesota site mentioned above points out.
